She also worked as an understudy to Leslie Uggams on Broadways' Hallelujah Baby. Payne has one son by the name of Gregory Abbott, Jr., who was named after her former husband. In 1974 she reached the cover of Jet Magazine and received the title of Dame of Malta from the Knight of Malta. The song "Band of Gold" provided for Payne's first gold-selling record, and she has released near twenty-three albums and compilations to date.
